P/T Director of Education

DESCRIPTION:

Temple Beth El is a haimish, vibrant, and welcoming community serving the South Bay of Los Angeles. One of the oldest Reform Jewish congregations in the area, TBE is celebrating its centennial this year. A proud member of the Reform movement, TBE is made up of 240 households, and approximately 50 Torah school students. TBE is large enough to host various inspiring services and events and small enough to personally maintain meaningful connections with each family. At Temple Beth El inclusivity is valued, elders are revered, and children are cherished.

We are seeking a motivated Jewish educator to lead our Torah School into its next 100 years. At Temple Beth El, we believe that Jewish education should be not only informative but also fun. We are blessed with an incredible staff of dedicated teachers, and a board of education is comprised of highly invested members. Our mission is to instill a love of Judaism while creating a community in which our children flourish as they develop their Jewish identities. Through family education, special holiday programs, student-led services, and innovative programming, we strive to create an environment that makes learning accessible, enjoyable, and enriching.

The Director of Education is an integral part of our staff team, alongside the rabbi, cantor, executive director, and finance coordinator. We work hard to create an environment of mutual support so that each of us can do our best work.

The Director of Education will supervise our five Torah School teachers, and collaborate with our board of education, which is made up of an incredible group of volunteers who help in welcoming families, security, and other needs should they arise.

A successful candidate will have a love of students, and a passion for passing the richness of Judaism down to the next generation in ways that excite them and speak to them. We are looking for someone who is a self-starter who can work independently and as a team player. The ideal candidate will have strong written and verbal communication skills, computer proficiency, and be capable of maintaining Torah school records, registration forms, database information, and school correspondence electronically. Candidates should have experience in Jewish education, and/or Jewish camp. They should feel confident in both formal and informal Jewish educational contexts. A degree in Jewish education and a connection to the Reform movement is preferred.

This is a part-time hybrid position, 25 hours per week. In-person hours include Sundays, 8 am-2 pm, and the first Friday night of each month (4:30-8:30 pm). Currently, staff meetings take place on Tuesday mornings, but we are willing to adjust that to accommodate your schedule.

Thursday afternoon Torah school takes place on Zoom. Some office hours are required, but other work can be done virtually.

  1. Lead the Temple Beth El Torah school with a commitment to its vision, mission, and values.

  2. Collaborate with staff members and volunteers to build upon the Torah school to create opportunities for family programs, informal education, and holiday experiences.

  7. Establish a calendar of class sessions and family opportunities.
